Children Mending Hearts was invited to present to HACLA (Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles) and to the State of California’s Chief Service Officer, Josh Fryday.

It’s hard to believe that we’re already one third of the way into our summer vacation and summer camps! A look back at our first three camps: Camp Bruce Lee, Arts Week, and Olympics Week. Next up, we’re magically shortening the week with our magic and illusion camp! Also coming up is Pirate Camp, Animal Kingdom Camp, Superhero Cap, Magic Kingdom Camp, and Game Camp! Each will have fun and educational activities and projects, as well as a fun field trip.

We have been working our way through the LAUSD Summer of Joy! We were selected to come to a dozen local elementary schools and offer two days of workshops. The theme of our presentations this year is “Empathy is My Superpower.”

On June 7th we celebrated the LOVE of our community with our Jordan Downs, Je T’aime event. We honored our graduating students and the community members who impact our daily lives. It was a wonderful day celebrating Watts and we were so glad to see so many smiles.

We are currently working with the Los Angeles YouthSource Center to place youth workers at the Jordan Downs Center for the duration of the summer. This will give our center a handful of workers, age 14-24, 100 hours of work experience with a salary paid for by the City of Los Angeles Economic Workforce Development Department.

Our top Summer Camp students were taken to Golf' n’ Stuff for a field trip, considering that golf is a summer olympic sport and mini golfing is fun for everyone!

Congratulations to Paris, Jordan Downs High Class of 2024! Paris has been a youth worker at the Jordan Downs Center since 2022.

Live la vie en rose like they do in the city of love as we celebrate in honor of the community we love, Watts.

We have solidified our summer programs for this year. We will have nine weeks of camps, with almost all of them being our unique programming.

Children Mending Hearts has been approved for LAUSD’s 2024 Summer of Joy Enhancement Programming. During the summer, we will work at LAUSD schools, running our educational programs with their students and bringing our special blend of empathy and education to these classrooms.

For Cinco de Mayo our students had a fun day celebrating Mexican culture and heritage.

CMH partnered with VSP on April 18th & 19th to bring VSP’s Eyes of Hope mobile vision clinic to Jordan Downs. The experience included eye exams, selecting your frames, and the glasses being made for over 90 residents of Jordan Downs at no cost.
