CMH Global Arts Summer Session is dedicated to empowering disadvantaged youth through specialized arts programming that builds empathy, global citizenry and social activism. CMH Global Arts Summer Session incorporates all of the principles taught in our “After School” classroom with a fun summer twist. This summer, CMH Global Arts will provide supplemental curricula to summer programs in under-served communities in Los Angeles and will reach over 200 students at the Watts Willowbrook Boys and Girls Club and Camp CoachArt. Each class’s curriculum is structured to provide participating youth with awareness about a specific country, skills in a specific artistic modality and focused opportunities to integrate their arts-learning with social activism.
Students participating in the CMH Global Arts Summer Session programs will learn the basics of digital photography, including camera functions, lighting, framing, portraiture, digital editing, printing and photo collage. The “cultural context” will focus on learning about life in Haiti through the eyes of photojournalists and the role photojournalism plays in social activism. Youth will ultimately explore the ways in which photography is a powerful tool for increasing empathy and public awareness of people living in the midst of global crises as well as those within their own communities.
Furthermore, CMH Global Arts Summer Session will participate in Camp CoachArt 2012. We will be partnering with CoachArt to provide a global learning photography workshop as a fun activity in their week-long summer camp. CoachArt provides lessons in arts and athletics for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses.

Additionally, CMH Global Arts After School will be launching three more semester-long courses with our new partner, After School All Stars, at two of their Los Angeles sites. Two Photography classes and one Fine Art class will be introduced to After School All Stars students in the fall.
With the CMH Global Arts Summer Sessions in progress and five CMH Global Arts After School semester programs launching in the fall, we need all the help we can get to ensure our students have the supplies they need to learn and grow as artistically empowered global citizens!
