MISSION STATEMENT:

Children Mending Hearts is dedicated to empowering disadvantaged youth through educational and arts programs that build empathy and global citizenry. Our goal is to directly engage the youth of America in global children's causes where they can positively impact the life of another child and ultimately realize their potential to effect change both in their own community and around the world.

ABOUT US:

Founded in 2008 by Lysa Heslov, the purpose of Children Mending Hearts is to give children worldwide the power to find and use their voices through creative expression.  CMH conducts workshops in the arts in America with local homeless children's organizations, and internationally with NGO's supporting children in conflict zones.

Through a team of arts/cultural specialists who conduct workshops in the arts including painting, photography, music, dance and drama, these kids experience the joy of childhood.  Children Mending Hearts' programs help expand the individual potential of these young people by strengthening their minds through creative stimulation and helping them grow into better global citizens.

Domestically, Children Mending Hearts empowers local organizations that work with disadvantaged and at-risk children throughout the country.  CMH finds out what the participating organizations need, where they are lacking, and where they need help.  CMH then brings in a volunteer pool so that when they leave a city after their workshop those volunteers are able to execute the Take Action points that CMH has given them.

An exchange between at-risk children in different cultures can take a child that society views as a victim, someone who is used to receiving, and empowers, educates and encourages them by showing them how to be of service.  If a homeless child creates something for a child refugee who doesn't just have a hole in his/her shoe, but is shoeless, then this disadvantaged child goes from victim to victorious.  Children gain a sense of being an advocate, of making sense of what is going on in their world, and knowing that even the simplest actions can make a difference.  They discover that their life can feel different.

Giving children in conflict zones a touchstone to what is going on with kids in America gives them hope.  Exploring their world creatively feeds their brains.  Without this outlet for expression, these children will literally stagnate in their growth.

Influenced by noted psychologist Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, we believe that stimulation from these art exchanges will be the connective tissue between children in various cultures and produce a new generation with a global vision motivated by a more peaceful impulse; children who will shift from seeing others through the prism of us and them, to a vision of we.  Whether benefiting a homeless child or a gang member; a child soldier or a displaced refugee, each workshop is tailored to specific cultural diversity and needs, and utilizes unique resources and artistic tools.

Our goal is to approach emotional and intellectual poverty and conflict resolution in a new way and to change the lives of disadvantaged and at-risk children in America and abroad.  Children's voices are louder, literally and figuratively, than adults. They are not jaded and can see the possibilities. The only thing that separates children here and abroad is geography and circumstance.  They are both refugees in their own societies.  Together we can impact changing the direction of their future by helping the world hear their voices.

Raised in a Christian home surrounded by music, Dr. Brenda R. Combs began playing piano and singing at the age of five.  While Brenda had a normal childhood, her life began a downward spiral in her teens.  After dropping out of college, she spent a decade partying and experimenting with drugs. Although she continued to pursue a career in the music industry, her life on the road with her band began to spin out of control. Her abuse of drugs led her to committing petty crimes.  She eventually ended up in jail and was sent to rehab.

Brenda's life became a cycle of drugs, jail, rehab and living homeless on the most dangerous streets of Phoenix where she was sexually assaulted, stabbed, burned and shot in a drive-by shooting.  Recovery from her wounds took over a year and multiple surgeries. Once back on the streets again, she relapsed into drug abuse and criminal activity. After several drug overdoses and suicide attempts, Brenda awoke in an alley to discover someone had stolen her shoes off her feet.  She knew she would die there, yet remembered her childhood faith and prayed for help.

Brenda entered a halfway house to begin to regain control over her life.  She went through detox, became involved with a church choir, and founded Much Love Ministries, an outreach program dedicated to helping homeless men, women and children in downtown Phoenix.  During this time, she fell in love and married, but at the age of 37, this short-lived, abusive relationship had ended and she was now the single parent of a special needs 3-month-old son.

Working two and three jobs to support herself and her son, Brenda found work as a teacher in a small charter school.  This inspired her to return to finish her own studies.  For four years she balanced multiple jobs, school and her son's care until, through her work with Habitat for Humanity, she was able to purchase her first home.

Brenda received her B.A. in Human Services in 2006 from the University of Phoenix and completed her Masters in Special Education from Grand Canyon University in 2007.  She was named one of the best teachers of the year for 2005-2006.  She is currently working on her Ph.D. in Education Leadership.  Her autobiography, Finding My Shoes, is scheduled for publication by 2011.  She continues to explore her music, releasing an EP, Do You Believe, and an album in 2008.  Brenda has been honored by former First Lady Laura Bush, and profiled in news stories from Reader's Digest to CNN. Through sharing her story, Brenda helps others realize that with hope nothing is impossible.

Rather than donate to a handful of these organizations to try and solve their individual problems, Scott developed Causecast to support a wide range of causes so they could all have the resources needed, and focus their attention and funds on the programs they were involved with in the field.

Debuting at TechCrunch50 in September of 2008, Causecast's first mission was to give nonprofit organizations an effective and aesthetically-pleasing forum to promote their ideas, raise money and increase awareness on the internet.  Today, Causecast works with over 50 nonprofits and dedicated leaders working to change the world.  As CEO, Scott has built a family and team of dedicated, creative and cause-minded individuals working together to provide people the resources they need to turn interest into action.

After growing up in Savannah, GA, Lysa moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the film industry. After establishing herself as a successful independent film producer, her circumstances began to drive her in a new direction.

In 2005, after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Lysa and her husband opened their home to a family that had lost everything in the storm. For five months the families co-existed, offering her a new way to look at her life, and eventually a new career. Soon after, the death of her bestfriend and sister-in-law inspired Lysa to raise over $40,000 for cancer research, firmly establishing herself as a working philanthropist and true humanitarian.

By 2007, Lysa’s efforts had become more focused and she participated in an aid trip to Darfur’s refugee camps. Her experience in seeing first-hand the devastating effects of genocide and poverty inspired her to create her organization, Children Mending Hearts. WIth a goal of empowering at-risk children in the United States by connecting them with global communities ofother children suffering from similar, and often worse, circumstances, including conflict, disaster and/or extreme economic deprivation, CMH uses educational and artistic programs to facilitate a new world view, one without borders, motivated by empathy and a desire for peace.

Since then, Lysa has traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad, Darfur, Kenya, Rwanda, Haiti and several cities in the U.S., leading a team of professionals to implement the CMH Global Arts Exchange Workshops

In 2012, Lysa facilitated the launch of a new program – CMH Global Arts After School. In addition to connecting children across the planet through shared projects and exchanges, the program focuses on enriching students in the U.S. with focused arts learning, awareness about specific countries, and empathy-based social skills.
